"JUST NOT IN THE MOOD AWARD" - Kit Dale
Kit Dale was advertised as being super spontaneous, with unexpected moves, energetic, super fun and funny (you can tell by his videos). But... once he started making his way to the mat you could just tell that he "just wasn't in the mood". From the way he walked with his sight on the floor, kinda shaking his head, and then when they introduced him and raised his hand kinda not having it.
His "mood" translated not just to his entrance and hand raising but to his BJJ as well. He fought slowly, un-energetic, with a different pace as we were expecting. Needless to say he lost the match and lost it really fast (in about 5 minutes) being one of the fastest submissions in METAMORIS history. But he's not a loser he gets an award from us.
“OLD SCHOOL CAN BE BORING TOO AWARD" - Saulo and Rodrigo
PLEASE DON'T GET ME WRONG I'm not saying it was a boring fight! Half of the fight was a grip fight judo style to see who could throw the other one. It was a great old-school fight. They get this award because they remind us that OLD SCHOOL CAN BE BORING TOO. Nowadays competitors like Keenan Cornelius, the Miyao bros. and Mendes bros. get a lot of heat for grip fighting in the 50/50 position, trying berimbolos and stuff like that which makes a fight "boring". Well half of this fight was just a grip fight too, not in the 50/50 position but standing up basically the same as the "new school". This fight reminded us that old school doesn't mean entertaining or new school means boring; different competitors make different fights which sometimes makes a fight boring or entertaining.
"I WAS JUST TOO EXCITED AWARD" - Chris Haueter
Like I said don't get me wrong the Saulo vs. Rodrigo fight was a great fight and entertaining, just ask CHRIS HAUETER aka the Referee. He was really excited and caught up in the fight so much so that after the fight time ended HE DIDN'T STOP THE FIGHT he continued to ref and didn''t stop the competitors.
So why did the match stop? If it was up to Chris Haueter it wouldn't have ended but the spectators started letting the Ref know the time had ended. At the beginning they were just kinda saying "TIME" but at the end they started to yell very profusely until the Ref couldn't refuse to not-hear them and had to stop the fight. I'm sure Chris Haueter would have loved to see more fighting and let them go on an hour or so fighting. Too bad the spectators started to scream.
"WHY DID THAT NOT BREAK AWARD" - KEENAN CORNELIUS
Vinny vs. Keennan was a very exciting fight, it was a 50/50 fight with A LOT OF SUB ATTEMPTS! It was an exciting match because unlike other 50/50 fight this was a fight in which both of them were going for the kill. Vinny did feel a bit frustrated during the match when he just could pass Keenan's guard, but Vinny didn't stop fighting or going for the kill he tried a lot of subs and tried to continuously to pass Keenan's Guard.
A great moment in the match was at the 14minute mark when Vinny went for a great Heelhook that made all the spectators cringe even Jeff Glover said it was a cringing moment. You could really see Keenan going a bit crazy spazing out trying to get out of the sub. Vinny really cranked the sub and the moment looked like it was going to break something but at the end the match was a draw.
"MOST SURPRISED MAN IN THE AUDIENCE MATCH" - Kenny Florian
The most surprised man in the audience wasn't even a spectator but the comentator. One of the most anticipated moments in METAMORIS 4 was the surprise match. A lot of speculation that it was going to be Ronda Rousey, Rickson, another Gracie, Chuck Norris, etc. We were all speculating and everybody had a different match in their heads. The cool thing about the surprise match was that nobody knew who it was going to be, even the competitors didn't know who they would be fighting. We all believed that maybe only Ralek knew, during the pre-show Kenny Florian showed a lot of interest in knowing who the surprise match was going to be. If the commentators didn't know who the surprise match was going to be they would be the ones more intrigued as they didn't know the surprise but were in on all the show.
So when Jeff Glover stood up and started to remove his suit Kenny was SO SURPRISED he started to laugh kinda uncontrollably, giggled and was speechless it was an awesome moment in the match.
"BEST DISPLAY OF YOGA AT A BJJ COMP AWARD" - Jeff Glover
During Jeff Glover's surprise match he was as playful as ever, giving his back, trying the Donkey Guard but one of the greatest moments (were even Ryron Gracie comented in "It's funny but this match isn't a Joke" Ryron Gracie) was when Jeff Glover decided to do some yoga an entice Baret Yoshida to attack him and get him to play his game and submit him. At the end the match was a draw but it was a great match (maybe the most exciting one) because of so many scrambles, weird positions, different attacks and subs.
"SEXIEST MOMENT IN THE COMPETITION AWARD" - Josh Barnett
I didn't find it sexy, nor did all the people I have talked to about this moment but it was definitely a unexpected moment and a shock-inspiring moment also. Here came one of the best fighters, catch-as-catch competitor and wrestler/ufc/strikeforce fighter and he's only in his briefs. It was a sexy moment, maybe not for us but I'm sure for someone and he took this award with no competition whatsoever.
"BEST BJJ ENTOURAGE EVER AWARD" - Andre Galvao
The last match at METAMORIS 4 ended with a sub and a great sub by Andre Galvao to Chael Sonnen. Andre Galvao is a multiple times WORLD CHAMPION and ADCC CHAMPION he has an aura to himself and is a very important figure in BJJ not just because of all his medals but he also is the leader of ATOS a BJJ team with a lot of prestige, medals among them and some of the most respectable BJJ athletes.
So when Andre Galvao came out with Rafael Mendes, Keenan Cornelius and 27 time World Champion Renato Laranja it was mesmerizing, exciting and not to mention REALLY COOL. It was a great entourage and the best we've seen in a BJJ comp for some time now.
